The seminar CDED YS on ‘Geographical indications and industrial and craft products: towards standardisation?’ will take place on 21 November from 8.30am to 5pm at the University of Perpignan, Campus du Moulin-à-Vent, amphitheatre 5.
The French legislature was one of the first EU countries to introduce specific protection for industrial or artisanal products (Hamon Act of 18 March 2014), which to date benefits 19 products including Grenat de Perpignan and Pierre du midi. Almost ten years later, the regulation on the registration, protection and control of geographical indications (GIs) for artisanal and industrial products possessing a given quality, reputation or other characteristic linked to their geographical origin was published on 18 October 2023.
The protection of GIs is of great interest to competition law and consumer law, which until now were the only bodies that could be mobilised to protect the link between a geographical name and a product, and more generally to defend producers and distributors against fraudulent geographical connections. The regulation promises uniformity in that it establishes a European Union title that will be protected on the territory of the Member States of the European Union. However, it will have to coexist with the other pre-existing foundations (competition; consumer; other intellectual property rights) which may have national disparities.
The aim of the conference is to bring together academics and practitioners specialising in these areas, both French and from other EU countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, etc.), and to involve representatives of the European Commission.
